Mario Marzi graduated from the Conservatory Rossini of Pesaro in saxophone. He specialised at the Conservatory of Bordeaux with Jean-Marie Londeix right after, at the end of his courses he was awarded with the prestigious Premier Prix du Ministre et Médaille d’Or à l’Unanimité
Mario is also the winner of nine Italian competitions and four international ones.
He usually performs with the RAI Symphonic Orchestra of Turin, the Santa Cecilia National Academy of Rome, the Arena of Verona Orchestra, the Teatro Comunale of Florence, the Teatro alla Fenice of Venice, the Italian Swiss Orchestra and the Caracas Symphony Orchestra.
For more than twenty years he worked for the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra and for the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra with conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Carlo Maria Giulini, George Prètre, Lorin Maazel, Luciano Berio, Semyon Bychkov, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Wolfang Sawallisch, M. W. Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly and Daniel Harding. He often plays with Riccardo Muti and is regularly invited to join Zubin Mehta and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra on concert tours.
He has played in various festivals and participated in concerts everywhere in the world (Venice, Milan, Pesaro, Salzburg, Athens, Madrid, Saint Petersburg, Mexico City, New York, Tokyo, Leipzig, Wien, Berlin, Los Angeles, Beijing, Brussels, Moscow and Barcelona…
He has a deep interest in the XX century music repertoire and some contemporary saxophone compositions have been dedicated to him.
His recording is quite important. He particularly made a CD of the major saxophone concerts for soloist and orchestra with the Giuseppe Verdi Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hans-Jörg Schellemberger.
Mario Marzi teaches saxophone at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan and also post-graduate courses and master classes around the world (Oporto, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Frankfurt, Beijing, Washington, London, Wien, Sydney academy, and Caracas, within the Abreu’s project- El Sistema).
He has been member of the jury in some of the main saxophone competitions, including Dinant in 2010. He is a representative of Mulligan Publishing in Italy.
He is also the author of several educational scores for Carisch Ed.
Mario is member of Bros. Quartet.
He wrote a book The Saxophone published in October 2009 (Zecchini Ed. Milan).
